In portable electronic devices, battery safety and stability are always a top design priority. For body cameras—devices worn for extended periods and subject to frequent charge/discharge cycles—a reliable battery protection system not only affects device longevity but is also essential for user safety. Types of Battery Protection Technologies

Below are the commonly used battery protection methods in body cameras:

1. NTC Thermistor Protection

NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors are widely used for temperature monitoring. When the battery becomes overheated (such as during charging), the NTC resistance decreases. The battery management system detects this and can suspend the charging process to prevent swelling or even fire caused by overheating.

2. Overvoltage/Undervoltage Protection

When the battery voltage exceeds a safe threshold (e.g., 4.2V), the protection circuit automatically disconnects the charging process. Similarly, if the voltage drops below the lower limit (e.g., 3.0V), it cuts off discharge to avoid deep discharge damage to the battery.

3. Overcurrent Protection

This prevents battery or motherboard damage due to a short circuit or high current discharge.

4. Short Circuit Protection

The system quickly disconnects the circuit during abnormal discharges (e.g., external short circuits), protecting both the user and the device.

Role of Charging ICs in Battery Protection

Many of the features listed above are implemented through the use of a battery charging IC. These ICs not only control the charging current and voltage but also support NTC input, overtemperature protection, charge termination logic, and more. They form the core of modern lithium battery protection systems.
