The lens aperture refers to the adjustable opening inside a lens that controls the amount of light entering the camera. Its size directly affects image brightness and depth of field. In body cameras, the aperture design plays a critical role in nighttime imaging, backlight performance, and overall image clarity.


1. Types of Aperture

Fixed Aperture
A fixed aperture has a preset opening size determined during manufacturing and cannot adjust based on lighting conditions. Most body cameras use fixed apertures due to their simple structure, low cost, and minimal power consumption—ideal for surveillance tasks under relatively stable lighting.

Auto Iris / Auto Aperture
An auto aperture automatically adjusts its opening size based on ambient light levels to maintain stable image brightness. While common in high-end surveillance cameras, auto iris is occasionally used in premium body cameras for environments with high contrast or wide dynamic range requirements.


2. Aperture and Light Intake

The larger the aperture (e.g., f/2.0), the more light enters the lens, resulting in brighter images—particularly beneficial in low-light or nighttime conditions. Smaller apertures (e.g., f/2.8 or f/4.0) reduce light intake, making images darker but often sharper.


3. Aperture and Depth of Field

Aperture not only controls brightness but also influences depth of field—the range within a scene that appears sharp:

  • Large aperture (small f-number) → Shallow depth of field: The subject is sharp while the background is blurred—ideal for highlighting specific targets.
  • Small aperture (large f-number) → Deep depth of field: Both foreground and background remain in focus—suitable for recording comprehensive scenes.

In body cameras, a moderate fixed aperture (typically between f/2.0 and f/2.4) is commonly used to balance night vision performance with adequate depth of field clarity.


4. Usage Recommendations

Depth-of-field sensitive use cases (e.g., face or license plate recognition): Aperture should be carefully matched with focal length for optimal clarity.

Low-light/nighttime operation: Opt for larger aperture lenses (e.g., f/1.8 – f/2.0) to increase brightness.

All-weather scenarios: Fixed aperture designs offer greater stability and durability.
